Getting Diagnosed with Ichthyosis
Understand the diagnostic journey, available tests, and the role of specialists in identifying and confirming ichthyosis.
The Diagnostic Journey
Initial Consultation
Visit your GP with concerns about dry, scaly skin. Describe symptoms, triggers, and family history.
Clinical Examination
Dermatologist examines skin appearance, distribution, and severity. Initial diagnosis often made clinically.
Diagnostic Testing
Additional tests may include biopsy, genetic testing, or other investigations to confirm type.
Confirmation & Type Identification
Test results confirm ichthyosis and identify the specific type affecting you.
Treatment Planning
Develop personalized management plan with your medical team.
Diagnostic Tests
Clinical Assessment
Visual examination of skin characteristics including scale appearance, distribution, and severity. Often sufficient for diagnosis.
Skin Biopsy
Small sample of affected skin examined under microscope. Shows specific histological patterns characteristic of ichthyosis type.
Genetic Testing
DNA analysis identifies mutations in genes responsible for ichthyosis. Confirms type and inheritance pattern.
Lipid Analysis
Measures lipid composition of skin. Abnormalities indicate barrier dysfunction and may confirm specific types.
Filaggrin Testing
Specific test for filaggrin mutations. Important for ichthyosis vulgaris diagnosis and prognosis.
Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
Measures water loss through skin barrier. Elevated in ichthyosis, confirms barrier dysfunction.
Specialist Roles
Dermatologist
Primary specialist for skin diagnosis and management. Coordinates care, prescribes treatments, and monitors progress.
Genetic Counsellor
Explains inheritance patterns, genetic testing options, and implications for family planning and relatives.
General Practitioner (GP)
First point of contact. Refers to specialists, monitors ongoing care, and prescribes routine treatments.
